On May 28, 2019, Afropunk announced the performers for this year's Afropunk Joburg festival. To give a little history, Afropunk has been operating in South Africa since 2017, always making use of the last two days of the year for their event.
The first Afropunk Joburg brought the likes of Laura Mvula, Blk Jks & Thandiswa Mazwai, and more. Guests were promised an appearance by Solange, however, at the last minute, she canceled the show citing medical reasons. In her statement, Solange said, "The past five months I have been quietly treating, and working through an Autonomic Disorder. It [has] been a journey that hasn’t been easy on me,” she wrote. “It’s a complicated diagnosis, and I’m still learning so much myself."
At the time, this news was met with disappointment and outrage without much recourse. Nevertheless, this year, Afropunk has announced that Solange will be here for the 2019 Joburg festival in fulfillment of their previous promise. In addition to a performance from Solange, fans can get excited about headlining acts like Rico Nasty, Miguel, Goldlink, Nao, and, South Africa's favorite, Masego gracing the Afropunk 2019 stage. Some of the acts that you may already recognize from South Africa's burgeoning music scene include LELOWHATSGOOD, Darkie Fiction, and DBN GOGO.
