A hip hop duo by the name Prxject Mayhem comes to you with their first offering as a group titled Introducing Mayhem, the EP. Consisting of Dj/ producer, 5mute (deciBel), and emcee, Melly Mel (of rap trio, The Assembly), the project is the duo's introduction to the game as they prepare the release of an upcoming self-titled LP, Prxject Mayhem.
Their introductory project is just 12:34 minutes long with tracks running at exactly 01:32 minutes long, well, except for one, the opener titled Record Store which is just a second longer than the rest. Much like Kanye West's idea of keeping tracks to a minimum with eight tracks, having minute-long tracks is a great way of teasing supporters and have them wanting more. You cannot play each track individually for the special reason that they run like an endless record, no stops or pauses.
With Record Store, deciBel gives us a boom-bap production as Mel reflects on how himself and the producer got to meet. The transition is impeccable as the beat calmly switches to Take My Time and much like the title, Melly Mel leisurely spits his raps and preaches his devotion to the music. Before you know it, Mel begins referencing Narcos in a verse following a news broadcast clip about drug smuggling, it's only a matter of time before it's onto the next one. This pattern continues to the succeeding songs. I don't know whether my head's bobbing to the boom-bap instrumentals or the raps, all I know is that I'm loving the artistry here. Prxject Mayhem is definitely under my radar, looking forward to hearing the next offering(s).
