In the wee hours of the morning, Blaklez finally released his third studio album, Baby Brother, to the world. The project had been in the pipelines for almost a year now since the initial announcement, it follows A Broken Man's Dream from 2015 and is a complete shift from the brokenness.
The project houses sixteen songs with three (Cool Slaves, Saka Nyuka and Jungle Justice) having been released before as singles. You'll come to appreciate the use of samples in songs like Better Late Than Never and Uthando Lwethu, not to mention Lez' flawless and detailed storytelling. From the jovial sounds of No Worries and Funky City to the more dumbed down and firm Dubai and Fathers And Daughters, you'll find how Lez did a good job with sticking to the relevant topics as well as highlighting the sensitivity in the latter tracks. Probably the most controversial song on the album, Who Killed Senzo, Blaklez tackles the issue of Senzo Meyiwa's death which is currently an unsolved case. Here, Lez speaks his truth and leaves no stone unturned in his quest to find the answers and hopefully help bring more urgency to the matter.
Before even getting a chance to listen to Baby Brother this morning, reviews were already up on social media and Kambridge Still's name kept popping up with people showing admiration for his lyrical prowess. The young rapper from Pretoria is featured in the songs, My Whole Life and Find My Way, quickly becoming a talent to look out for. You cannot deny his talent and his double appearances in Lez' album proves that even the rap Steve Biko couldn't get enough as well. Somewhere in between, Lez also finds time to show love to the ladies and has his heart on his sleeve in songs like Live For Me and Uthando Lwethu. I must admit, I am a sucker for a good hip hop love song and the wording in these songs are enough to have you weak in the knees. I think we can all agree that the album was worth the wait, the Biko nation is satisfied. Cop the project below and have a happy Baby Brother day!
