Cop @Sliqe #NavyBlack Album Today!

By @Spokenpriestess on 07/13/2018 in News

It's Friday the 13th and as promised, Sliqe delivers his sophomore album to kick off your weekend. The 11 track piece goes by very quickly, something that is unusual for many an album. This also sets the project apart to many meaning you're going to find yourself pressing the repeat button on it.

Navy Black, co-produced with and featuring Makwa on most tracks, opens with a cheeky clip of Papa Action bullying his fellow class mates taken us back to an iconic scene in the classic drama series Yizo Yizo. This either signals Sliqe's intention to run sh% with the album, or he's just making a statement about his ghetto fabulousity. The album then swings into the familiar Biskop featuring Kwesta. Having heard this one, it now finds a new context on the album preluding my favourite song on Navy Black, Girls Jungle. We got to chat to Sliqe about the album on the Red Couch and he detailed how the recording of the song came about. ChianoSky is the perfect voice for this upbeat song. We can't get over its maskandi guitar influence matched up with the samba sounds on the track while the lyrics are so sexy. This is an incredible fusion of urban Afrosounds, they nailed it.

Moving deeper into the album, we finally get to hear the full version of Sliqe's collaboration with Sy Ari Da Kid on Oh Well. He opens the dreamy track with a mellow flow before Makwa jumps in ahead of the Supa Mega. Sy blends perfectly in with the boys, we can see why he was so excited about the song. Once AKA comes onto the track, you hear an extension of his Touch My Blood vapours which match his current sonic design. While you're still tripping off that, the grungy Town Talk featuring Flame and Ecco comes on. Might we add that the production on this album is, "tlean?" SHU! Flame and Ecco give us that addictive Wrecking Crew drip they've been serving us all year. The tag team addresses that girl that's famous for being a liker but they don't mind messing with either way. Their vocals and musical chemistry on the track is unmatched. Up next is the wavy Navy which Sliqe recently shared with the album pre-order. The production of this track immediately consumes you, that paired with Gobi's signature voice will surely have you singing along in no time. Welcome to the feel good section of the album 'cause the next track, Backyard with Tshego, paints the picture of a private chill session at an exclusive backyard. Something like what the doctor has ordered for the summer, se si khathele yiwinter Nkos'yam! Tshego brings his soulful vibes to the song as Makwa joins in on the hook as well.

Makwa's goofiness comes to play on the Fully Skit, before the full length song swings in picking up on the laid back mood as Sliqe grabs the mic to adlib on the hook as well. L-Tech glides onto the song with his cooler-than-your-average flow adding his sauce to the song. It's now a fully unleashed pati at this point in time. The Kasi Anthem with Emtee and Maraza then comes on, taking us back to those days when Dionysys Recordings was still bubbling under as a collective ready to mess up the game. Having Emtee and Maraza on one track is such a heartwarming experience since their brotherhood went a bit astray some years back but they're now in a better space with each other. The vocal combo on this song is out of this world as each artist steps up to bring their own pack of flavour to make the pots smell good. Just refreshing! Before you know it the album has come to a close with another familiar track, Dream Girl, which is a perfect send off for the album. We're totally loving how the tracks seep into each other quite seamlessly without making your moods jump from one feeling to the next. Well done to the boys for curating such a smooth listening experience.
