@TouchlineTruth - S.O.O.N Compilation

By @Spokenpriestess on 07/05/2018 in Projects You Should Hear

We come bearing gifts, gifts that don't necessarily belong to us but we're blessed to pass on either way. This here is Touchline's latest body of work, a compilation he shares that will certainly boost your mood and have you bopping your head with a warm smile on your face.

The S.O.O.N compilation is a project that Touchline dedicates to his fans by sharing freestyles on some of his favourite instrumentals and boy does he show up. From the first track S.O.O.N he already captures your attention with the line, "I heard that you've been praying for a rapper that actually represents you, not those that tweet humanity but their music neglects you..." Listen, we can all pack up and go home to be honest. What an exquisite entry!

For the rest of that song and the project you get to fall in love with Touchline's authenticity and his undying love for his reality, the South African narrative, not the pretentious fairytales we consume in a lot of music today. This, I believe, is what will always set him apart from a lot of young rappers on the scene. He adds his previously shared 16 Flow for supervision and control, it picks up really well from the intro. He sports a high confidence in his dream as he raps about what it took for him to pursue music as he retells conversations with his mother and just where he comes from. My favourite of the many on the compilation is Kontrolla, perhaps 'cause of the sex appeal of the beat itself. However, Touchline comes all the way through with the gully raps which he also delivers playfully by having his engineer mess with the left and right panning of the music as he raps in the background. This is the most exciting freestyle in how he does acrobatics with the flow switches, pheuw! Can someone tell Touchline to share the skill with other kids 'cause it's clearly plentiful in his fort? The level of braggadocio in not his lyrics, but how he seamlessly goes from English raps to a ghetto fabulous vernac delivery is impeccable.

I must've listened to this project for about 3 or 4 times now, which is the beauty of short projects 'cause they are easily consumed, giving way for the loop option once its over. He flows into Don't Try Me and he's on his real talk about the amount of authenticity that needs to be injected into the game. We are in love with this man's bravery to stand by his true thoughts and not sugarcoat things to be favoured by anyone. As Stogie T would say, "Talk your sh%!" Onto the next freestyle, Release Koolkat, he's too nice with the seamless flows on this kwaito tinged beat as he just flows with no stop. THIS IS HIP HOP! Touchline's hunger is very evident in the way he raps with conviction and precision. His love for another artist is also quite commendable in how he manages to infuse Malum's speeches, phrases, and other clips into the song. I just wonder when this freestyle was done 'cause I don't want to misunderstand the context and what his intentions were in championing for the release of Malums. Asikho lapho though.

He goes all reflective on If Tomorrow Never Comes reminding us of #5Grand and even his ode to Mama Winnie. This again proves Touchline's affinity for speaking to the heart. His word play and storytelling is in top form as he bleeds his truth out rapping about his deep love for the music while juxtaposing with topics of making the most of what you have and maximising on moments. He closes the compilation with one of the most nostalgic beats of all time for the Juicy Freestyle. The same way he opened the project is the same way he sends it off, with a heart-to-heart about wanting to put his all into his dream. He lets you into his life by rapping about his good deeds, his desire to make it in the game, the sacrifices he's made to do music, and so much more. These are the stories of many a rapper and Touchline proudly owns his truth without flinching. It is so refreshing to hear a young rapper do a whole project without flossing about bottles, bi%$es, VIP entrance, swag, his entourage, and outrageous claims about their rank in the game. Touchline reminds me of what the beginning of hip hop was all about, truth expression. I am so in love with his heart and soul in this music. The best part about it is that he is having fun with it. What cadence he exudes!
