The day that YoungstaCpt finally presents his 30th mixtape to date has arrived and it's the third collaborative work between him and Maloon The Boom. As promised, To Be Continued is a full boom bap escape which will go down well with the heads and his fans.
YoungstaCpt typically opens the mixtape with his smack talk vibes on the intro, sounding like he's on the phone with Maloon, before the show begins on the dreamy For Now. This track sets the scene for the laid back, and lethal music that you're about to experience. Baqabond's presence on the song is a perfect complement to Youngsta's signature voice and rhyming style, it just works. This is swiftly followed by Muchas Gracias which they dropped last week with a visual ahead of the mixtape's arrival. I absolutely love his smack talk on here, as well as how he lays down the rules for the streets. The best part about it is that he sounds like he's rapping all this while playing a game, not trying hard at all to break a sweat with these rhymes yet they are so potent. The next skit (Cursing lifestyle) creates a break in the music and adds some ambiance to the mixtape as we tip into Aa+ featuring Miles Singleton and Di-Meh. Here, YoungstaCpt brings out his local lingo, a mix of Afrikaans and tsotsi-taal, to shine alongside his international colleagues on the track creating a motswako of nationalities on it. Maloon took a lot of effort in creating multiple pockets that dip in and out throughout the song, almost like a packet of skittles where you never know what colour will come out next.
Remember when we posted about Youngsta sharing a teaser from the tape months ago? Signature Bounce is the bouncy skit he previewed a while back and it's a dope prelude to the heavy sounding Whose Who In The Zoo. The tape takes a chunky turn around here where Maloon uses heavy elements in the beat to weigh down the song while Youngsta double times his flow. The synths here have that classic West Coast feel added to the heavy bounce the song has. Sy?Nz picks up the pace and carries on with the heavy bass, as well as the layered synths throughout the song. You slowly find yourself wanting to break into crib-walks and Harlem shakes on this song. By the 8th track of the tape, Youngsta still sports a relentless flow packed with lethal bars, proving time and again that this man probably drops bars in his sleep. There can be no other explanation! We love how the added voice notes on the mixtape keep to the authenticity of Youngsta's Kaapstad identity in one way or another, and you hear this in the gang rules at the end of Sy?Nz right before you get a shout out on Blakka.
The tape comes back down as we near the end with a hopeful song titled Kruger's. Youngsta raps about the hardships of living in the hood wishing for a better life. The warped synths on the track create an illusion of a day dream, almost as if his hook is sung by the multiple walks of life he paints in his verses. Youngsta really knows how to embody the most delicate parts of a perfect Kaap hood story. The next track, Hectic, flows in from the foot of the previous song as Youngsta addresses matters of the heart - something you didn't think he'd do based on the themes of the tape. However, he takes that whole, "even gangsters need love," typa approach in his raps making him sound almost romantic. Robert Black adds a beautiful softness to the smooth track, breaking all the toughness we've heard in the whole tape so far. It's not to say that Youngsta is all hard and no softness, 'cause if you follow his work you'll know that he too can really simmer it down, this song is just a refresher on this particular tape where he's been swinging bars left, right, and centre. The outro sounds like a scene out of a movie as you hear the hood in the background while some guys relay a dramatic story to Youngsta in the background, another depiction of life where he's from.
This mixtape, although entirely boom bap, is actually quite easy on the ear because of Maloon's subtle production. He stayed away from making that extremely heavy backpack music that could've easily given you a headache from bopping your head all throughout the tape. His musical finesse is what guides Youngsta's unforgettable flows and deliveries on each track, giving him space to paint vivid pictures on intricate beats. Surely, not anyone can pick this up and understand all of it, but a few replays will certainly leave anyone lost in his eventful world. A stellar 30th project to seal off Youngsta's hefty mixtape run. Now for the album!
