We get an immaculate display of our people through the work of Carl Houston McMillan on Morena Leraba's visual for Impepho. Courtesy of the Jameson Music Video Grant project, a strong team of photography and cinematography assembled to tell the story of Basotho shepherds through an insider's perspective.
We see Morena Leraba as a herdsman who goes through multiple spaces of a Mosotho shepherd; laying in the mountain grass fields, horse parading and racing, marching through the soiled streets, and showing off the fashion of these men. Their clothes may look like rags but there is something poetic about the styling of this music video that speaks on the natural finesse of Africans. It also speaks on the fascinating traditions that we practice. What a beautiful documentation of the Basotho in this motion picture. My favourite part is when ManKind enters the pub to dance off with the shepherds trying to start some trouble but Morena difuses that mess with a handshake showing the inherent gentlemanly character of the Basotho. So many beautiful nuances in this visual. My heart is captured in these blankets and boots, on these mountains, and in the sparkling skin of their horses. BRAVO!
