@Maggz100 On #FLAG, Being Independent x His Need To Stand Alone

By @Lenoir on 09/21/2017 in Balcony Interview

We got quite a rare opportunity to sit down with Maggz for an interview, rare because he's been lowkey and we haven't heard much from him prior to his surprise album drop which had social media in a frenzy. FLAG (For Love And Glory) dropped a few weeks ago and it was his idea to make an impromptu drop because as he says, it felt right. He had wanted to drop the project last year but was faced with challenges in terms of it dropping and how he didn't feel like a priority to his previous label. He is, of course, independent although having a distribution deal with Mabala Noise and as many indie artists know, putting stuff out on your own is financially straining, to say the least. But he made it work and released quite an impressive and long-overdue body of work. I totally admire him for holding back and not releasing the project sooner because he needed to find his feet first.

We also speak about him not being involved in all the politics that surrounded his previous label and his feelings about all that. M-A-Double also mentions new surprise additions to his albums, his loyalty to whichever camp he represents and ability to blend in with any style or sound given to him. We then go on to talk about his working relationships with pH and Maphorisa and how he always wanted to work with the latter. This, of course, happened when they collaborated on Vaye with Kly. He then mentions his unique delivery and the guest features on the album, also adding that he wanted to work on standing alone in this project which is why he kept the features to a minimum.
