For part two of our sit in with the legendary Hugh Masekela and Makhado, they discuss fashion and while the former spoke about how Jazz influenced the way people dressed, Riky discussed his love/hate relationship with fashion. Both figures have a high fashion sense and they're both influential in their own right, an important topic for the culture. What do you know about "cashmiya" son? Uncle Hugh had a huge fashion influence growing up, which made him want to go out and get his kotini game on point, now the only wool he wears is "cashmiya", you better recognise. The pair went on to talk about how they never lost their roots, mentioning how they've always made sure to never forget where they come from.
I was listening to HHP and Anatii's Toto & Gogo the other day and the track speaks so much about never forgetting your name and your foundation, a problem many young people have today. Staying true to oneself is actually what inspired Uncle Hugh's Heritage Foundation to help people learn different languages and embrace their culture. Riky touched on how when he started, they were convinced that rapping in English was important so that people overseas could understand their lyrics, this changed of course. His appreciation almost made Uncle Hugh shed a tear on his cashmiya jersey. Stay tuned for a possible future collab.
