The parents of late rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes have shared their emotional responses following the extradition of two of the suspects accused of his murder. The development marks a significant step toward the legal proceedings that could bring accountability in the tragic case that has gripped the nation.

AKA’s mother, Lynn Forbes, took to Instagram to express the weight of the moment. She wrote, “If you were the one coming home today … that would be justice for me. Everything else is just process. This South African air is suffocating today … I cannot breathe.” Her words capture the enduring grief and longing for closure that have marked the family’s journey over the past two and a half years.

Speaking to eNCA, AKA’s father, Tony Forbes, described a mixture of relief and resolve. He said: “I’m pleased that we’ve arrived at this day. It’s been a long time coming. But for me, I feel satisfied now that when the trial starts that all seven will be on trial. Well, I hope all seven will be on trial together. In particular, the brother that pulled the trigger.” He added that the investigating team and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) have “kept me abreast over the last two and a half years. When they called to say that they have arrested the two brothers in Eswatini … they told me it’s going to be a complicated process. So it won’t happen quickly. And today it’s happening. So I’m very pleased with that.”

The murder of AKA and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane occurred outside a Durban restaurant in February 2023. Authorities arrested two brothers in Eswatini, who are now facing extradition to South Africa. These two, along with five others, are accused of multiple crimes, including murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and conspiracy to commit murder. The trial is expected to begin in July 2026, with the hope that all accused will face trial together.

The extradition represents an important milestone in a long and complex investigation. For the Forbes family, it brings both relief and a renewed sense of resolve. Lynn Forbes’ words convey the emotional burden and enduring grief, while Tony Forbes’ remarks highlight the careful progress of law enforcement and the legal system.

Although the extradition does not constitute justice on its own, it paves the way for the trial that could provide answers and accountability. For the Forbes family, justice will be measured not just by arrests but by a trial that fully examines the circumstances of the attack and holds those responsible to account.

As South Africans await the next chapter in the case, the words of Lynn and Tony Forbes serve as a reminder of the personal cost behind headlines, the patience required in the pursuit of justice, and the hope that accountability will eventually bring some measure of closure.
